Rare 1770s Wedgwood Black Basalt Medal – Pope Gregorius XII (Gregory)

A rare and seldom-seen Wedgwood black basalt medal portraying Pope Gregorius XII, the 206th Pope who played a significant role during the Western Schism and famously resigned in 1415. This fine bas-relief medal is a true testament to Wedgwood’s mastery of classical portraiture in basalt.
Historical Note:
Pope Gregory XII (c. 1326 – 1417), born Angelo Corrario in Venice, held important church offices before his papacy beginning in 1406. He abdicated in 1415 at the Council of Constance and passed away in 1417.
Markings:
Unmarked, typical for pieces from this series; bears the number (208) on the reverse, consistent with Wedgwood’s production practices.
