Rare Wedgwood-Style Portrait Medallion – Viscount William Dudley and Ward
Circa 1817 – Jasperware or White Terracotta on Lilac Ground
A finely detailed and seldom-seen portrait medallion commemorating The Right Honorable William Viscount Dudley and Ward, Baron of Birmingham &c., a prominent political figure and public benefactor of the late 18th and early 19th century. This medallion likely dates to circa 1817, the same year a bronze medal was issued bearing the famous inscription: “The Rich Man’s Model and the Poor Man’s Friend.”
Crafted in lilac jasper or white terracotta with sharp profile relief, this piece captures the dignified bust of Viscount Dudley facing right. The craftsmanship and classical presentation are in keeping with other portrait medallions produced in the Wedgwood tradition of the Regency period.
Condition:
Excellent condition for its age and use. No cracks or visible restoration. The back is unmarked and retains its original brass hanging device.
