Rare Wedgwood Jasperware Portrait Medallion – Sir Isaac Newton, 18th/19th Century
Referenced in Reilly’s Wedgwood Portrait Medallions – Museum Piece
An exceptional Wedgwood portrait medallion of Sir Isaac Newton, executed in classic grey-blue jasperware with white relief, after the famous portrait by Sir Godfrey Kneller. This historically significant piece is listed in Reilly’s authoritative book on Wedgwood portrait medallions, confirming both its authenticity and rarity.
The medallion features Newton’s name in script and is marked Wedgwood on the reverse. The relief is sharply undercut, characteristic of early Wedgwood craftsmanship from the 18th–19th century.
Condition:
The medallion itself is in good antique condition with a visible repaired break to the lower section (cleanly restuck).
The frame has been re-gilded with real gold leaf and antiqued to reflect the period, following damage. The medallion is currently not fixed inside the frame, leaving that to the discretion of the future owner.
Dimensions (approx):
Medallion: 4 7/8″ high x 3 1/2″ wide
A true museum-grade collector’s item, seldom seen on the market, and ideal for those with a passion for scientific history and classical Wedgwood portraiture.
Please note: The “Dancing Hours” urn seen in the background is offered separately.
