Extremely Rare Wedgwood Creamware Custard Cup & Cover – Armorial of the O’Brien Family
Circa 1770–1790 – Museum-Quality Piece

An exquisite example of 18th-century Wedgwood creamware, this custard cup and lid are beautifully hand-painted and feature the armorial crest of the O’Brien family, including their Latin motto:

“Lamh laidir an uachdar” – “The strongest hand uppermost”

This fine piece is decorated with feather-edged molding and leg form handle detailing, typical of the Georgian era, and both the cup and the cover proudly display the O’Brien arms. The crest, showing a sword-bearing arm issuing from a cloud, is skillfully rendered in polychrome enamels.

Marks:
Marked “Wedgwood” along with additional potter’s marks to the base.

Condition:
Very good overall condition for its age. There is a tight hairline on the reverse of the cup, as shown in the photographs, and light surface marks consistent with age and use. The form remains elegant, and the family crest is crisp and well preserved on both the cup and the lid—a rare feature.

Dimensions (approx):

Height: 3″

Width (handle to handle): 4 1/2″

Diameter: 3″

A truly exceptional and rarely seen armorial Wedgwood piece, ideal for serious collectors of Georgian ceramics, armorial porcelain, or historical creamware.
